Terracotta Pots Cattleya and Epiphytic Orchids

Price range: € 14,00 through € 21,00

Handmade unglazed terracotta pots designed for Cattleya and epiphytic orchids. Natural clay porosity ensures constant root aeration and moisture regulation, preventing root rot. Structural weight provides plant stability during critical rooting phase. Five bottom holes enable drainage, ventilation, and cable-tie fixation. Four side holes allow hanging cultivation. Low-fired for maximum breathability. Available in 17×9cm, 21×9cm, 24×10cm. Functional design tested in real orchid cultivation.

These unglazed terracotta pots have been designed and tested specifically for the cultivation of Cattleya and other epiphytic orchids that require high root aeration, stability during rooting, and constant transpiration. They are not decorative containers: they are functional tools based on real cultivation experience.

One: structural weight that guarantees rooting
The weight of clay is a real advantage, not a drawback. A terracotta pot filled with moist substrate remains completely stable, preventing any movement of the plant during the critical phase of new root emergence. When a Cattleya produces a root, that root needs several days to adhere to the substrate without being disturbed. If the plant moves, the root breaks or stops growing. The weight of clay eliminates this problem without the need for additional ballast or complex fixing systems to stabilize the setup.

Two: natural porosity of the material for optimal root development
Low-temperature fired clay retains a microporous structure that allows constant gas exchange through the walls. Excess water vapor is gradually released, preventing condensation buildup in contact zones between roots and substrate. This dynamic balance between moisture absorption and release creates a stable microclimate that favors thick, turgid, healthy roots. Roots growing in direct contact with terracotta often adhere firmly to the clay, forming a natural anchorage that reinforces overall plant stability.

Three: fixation system using straps for newly transplanted plants
The pot incorporates five holes in the base: one central hole of larger diameter for drainage and vertical ventilation, and four peripheral holes that allow zip ties or straps to pass through to secure the plant to the container. This anchoring prevents any oscillation during the first critical months after repotting. Specialized growers report that plants secured with straps can produce between four and six new roots in a season, while unsecured plants barely develop two. In the image, black ties can be seen passing through the basal holes and keeping the rhizome immobile. The green mesh over the central hole prevents fine substrate particles from falling through during the first waterings.

Four: configuration for hanging cultivation
Four lateral holes symmetrically distributed in the upper wall allow cords or cables to pass through to suspend the pot. Hanging cultivation improves air circulation around the foliage, allows adjustment of distance to the light source, and facilitates the natural development of pendulous inflorescences. The image of the suspension system shows how the cables pass through the holes, converge at a junction point, and connect to an upper hook. The weight of the clay, far from being a problem, guarantees stability even in hanging pots with large plants.

Five: versatility beyond Cattleya
Although originally designed for Cattleya, these pots work for any epiphyte with similar requirements: Laelia, Brassavola, Encyclia, Epidendrum, and thick-rooted Oncidium. The common characteristic is the need for a well-aerated root system that can dry quickly after watering without becoming completely dehydrated. Unglazed clay naturally provides this balance.

Six: sizes and selection criteria
Three sizes available depending on growth stage:
17 × 9 cm: young plants, recent divisions, compact species (3–8 pseudobulbs)
21 × 9 cm: plants in vegetative development (8–15 pseudobulbs)
24 × 10 cm: mature specimens with extensive root systems (15+ pseudobulbs)

Selection should consider growth potential over the next two to three years. Epiphytes tolerate frequent repotting poorly; each manipulation interrupts the growth cycle and opens windows of vulnerability to infections.

Seven: glazed saucer as an optional accessory
Available separately to collect excess irrigation water and increase ambient humidity in indoor cultivation or dry environments. It does not compromise aeration nor turn the pot into a self-watering system. Retained water evaporates gradually, creating a humid microclimate without saturating the roots. Not necessary in greenhouses or spaces with relative humidity above 60%.

Eight: artisanal manufacturing and controlled firing
Handmade in small batches. Fired at moderate temperatures (800–900°C) to preserve natural porosity without vitrifying the clay. Over time, unglazed clay develops a surface patina of salts and microorganisms: evidence that the material is fulfilling its function as an active interface. Slight variations in thickness and tone between units are the result of individual artisanal production, not defects.

Functional terracotta pots designed and tested for orchid cultivation, not decorative containers.
Custom orders available from a certain number of pots for non-standard sizes or specific technical requirements.
